News just in…

Hugh to stand down

Hugh Woodford has made clear at a recent committee meeting that (unless bribed with a lot of money !) he will stand down from his function as co-opted joint Programme Secretary at the AGM this November.  Hugh has done his half of the programme, the mid-week meets, for the last four years, an effort which should be well appreciated.  This means that someone is required to do one half of the programme (it is not clear which half at present) and enquiries can be made to perhaps Ted Bumford or Chris Barber for further details as to what this entails.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING!

North Wales

June 1-4

Words from Hugh

The Cae Gwyn campsite in Nant Peris was quieter than usual for a Bank Holiday weekend.  The Saturday was the warmest day of the year so far with temperatures in the 70’s.

It was a straight forward choice between an ascent of Bryant’s Gully on  Glyder Fawr or the grade 2/3 scramble on Llechog, followed by a choice of routes thereafter.  The latter option was taken as the sun would be on our backs and dry out many wet spots.

Elli, Manon, Hugh and Terry relax after the Llechog scramble

All eight of us set out, ensuring we had enough equipment for trickier sections, if needed.  Ropes were used on a couple of sections on Llechog.  After lunch at the end of the scramble it was across to Llyn Du’r Arddu for a grade 1 scramble up the Eastern Terrace of the ‘Cloggy’ cliff and then Snowdon.

Y Lliwedd from Crib Goch

The summit of Snowdon was busy as usual and it was also the day of the 1000m peaks fell race.  From here we split up, Dave and myself heading south to Yr Aran, Dave’s last 2000 footer, whilst the others did Crib Goch’s main ridge and North Ridge.  Our route was quicker giving a 10-hour day and the other six people enjoyed a 11-hour plus day!!  But Terry did admit that it was probably the finest day’s scrambling he had done in N Wales.  The weather on Sunday was not too good and being a bit tired it was breakfast at Pete’s Eats cafe followed by England V Sweden in the Lake Padarn Hotel and gear shopping in Llanberis.  Join us over the August Bank Holiday weekend for more walks, scrambles, climbs, and food and drink!

Can you fill this space…

And other things..

In addition to this weekend there has been a great deal more going on of course -

Some of Colin’s climbing trips are mentioned below and there was a trip to Scotland in June, though I have no details from this.

With a recent suspected case of the dreaded Foot and Mouth thankfully proving negative, we are enjoying an unblemished summer of walking and climbing again.  Except when the ‘April showers’ drag on into June and July !!

I trust the Bosigran meet went well though I have not heard. (It usually does)

If any one has any news on this or another meet, any story to tell for the next newsletter……

AND WHAT’S COMING UP!

Extra Climbing Weekends

From Colin Powell

In the November newsletter I suggested three weekends when tides were favourable for some extra climbing in Pembroke.  I’ve managed 5 weekends on these fine British coastal crags since Easter, 3 of them with club members.  Unfortunately by far and away the wettest, with only half a day on rock, was the Bosherton meet of June 15-16, the only meet on the programme.  There are lots of good climbing meets planned but also several weekends without climbing when I hope to get on rock probably in Pembroke again, and in Central Wales or Cwm Cowarch e.g. July 20/21, August 17/18, August 31/Sept 1.  If you are interested in these, or want to climb during the week, or extend the climbing weekends on the programme, get in touch.  Judith & I will be away in Italy but I should be back for the Baggy meet, July 13/14.

Advance dates for your diary

From Hugh

·          October 19th is the start date for a potential trip to Scotland in the half-term – enquiries to Keith Anderson.  Not an official meet as yet, but could become one!

·          Jan 18th weekend is the date for the next Club Dinner at Plas y Brenin.

(That’s what you call advanced news!)

GMC TABLES  (list of members achievements)

Recent achievements-

Compiled by Dave Bingham

Welsh 2000ft peaks  & Classic Rock

Dave Bingham became the ninth member listed to complete the Welsh peaks over 2000 feet on the recent club meet in North Wales.  The final peak was Yr Aran which lies a mile or south of Snowdon and was the 188th top completed on the John and Anne Nuttall’s recent list.  The first peak was Snowdon itself, at the age of 15.

Anna completed “Hope”, one of the classic climbs on the Idwal Slabs, with Geraint and Julie, followed by the grade 3 scramble on the Cneifion Arete.

New walking routes added

Five new walking routes have been added into the Tables:  These are the Yorkshire 3 peaks (24 miles), The TwmbarlwmTrek (26 miles), the Abergavenny 3 peaks (20 miles) and the Talybont Trial (20 miles) and finally the New Caerphilly Summits route (26 miles).  If you wish to be entered as having completed any of these please contact me in due course.

The New Caerphilly Summits route is a resumption of the old route used many years ago, the recent event known simply as the ‘Caerphilly Summits’ has ceased to run for the last two years.

The New Caerphilly Summits event will take place on July 6th.
